Wrexham made it three wins on the bounce in the National League Youth Alliance with a comfortable 2-0 victory over FC Halifax Town at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium. With Owen Cushion in fine form in central midfield, the Young Reds made sure of the three points thanks to second-half strikes from Rowan Davies and Jacob Milner.
After an even opening, the first real chance of the game fell to Caleb Hughes, but his side-foot shot failed to beat Halifax keeper Alex Cockerill. The visitors came close to opening the scoring on the half-hour mark when Amari Sokoni's cross came back off the woodwork much to the relief of Jack Pilkington.
With chances at a premium, Cushion tested Cockerill with a 25-yard free-kick on 33 minutes, but the Shaymen's custodian managed to tip the ball behind for a corner. Mikey Hayman then capitalised on Hughes' deft through ball to race clear only for Cockerill to save the day once again.
The game continued in a similar vein after the break with Harry Ashfield seeing a goal bound shot blocked before Halifax's Tom Jenkinson headed just over the crossbar. The deadlock was finally broken on 56 minutes when Rowan Davies met Cushion's right-wing corner with a thunderous header for his first goal of the season. Milner doubled the lead 13 minutes later when he fired home Hughes' low cross after another fine run from the left-winger.
"I'm pleased with the win and it's nice to get another clean sheet," reflected coach Dan Nolan after the final whistle. "It was a good solid team performance against a very competitive Halifax side."
