Wrexham progressed to the third round of the Welsh Youth Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win at Buckley Town courtesy of goals from Mikey Hayman, Dan Wright and Caleb Hughes. The Young Reds dominated the game with midfielder Owen Cushion in fine form, his precise passing ensuring that Hughes and Jacob Milner were a constant threat down the flanks.
After a cagey opening, Wrexham took the lead on 33 minutes when Cushion's whipped free-kick found Hayman who netted with a deft flick header. The lead was doubled just on half-time when Cai Evans' low shot was parried by Joe O'Connor straight into the path of Wright who bundled the ball home from close range. That proved to be Evans' last involvement as the centre-back was replaced by Harry Dean at the interval.
Despite the scoreline, Buckley started the second period brightly and Owen Jones tested Matty Hess with a snap shot which the Wrexham keeper tipped behind for a corner. James Rainbird responded for the visitors with a surging 50-yard run that took him into the opposition box, the left-back seeing his shot saved by O'Connor.
Shortly after a nasty clash of heads had forced Reece Oliver to be substituted by Harry Ashfield, Hughes made it 3-0 when he converted Ashfield's low right-wing cross. Cushion then fired narrowly over before Wright hit the woodwork with a fierce shot from Milner's centre. Cushion's superb through ball set up a late chance for Hughes but O'Connor once again proved equal to it.
