Match Report

Wrexham romped to victory over their Derbyshire visitors with a Kai Evans hat-trick inside the first 26 minutes sealing the destiny of the points long before the interval . The young striker was in fine form before injury forced him off early in the second period, the Division’s top scorer subsequently being ruled out for the rest of the season.

That was the only disappointment on a day when the Young Reds played some excellent, controlled possession football. Coach Dan Nolan opted for the same starting XI that had won at FC United of Manchester the previous week and that confidence was rewarded inside the the first minute when Evans drilled home a low shot from the edge of the penalty-area.

Dan Jones doubled the lead on 18 minutes when he rolled the ball into an empty net after some fine approach play and Tom Jenkins added a third soon afterwards with a fine turn and shot after good work by Jacob Milner. Evans then completed his hat-trick with two goals in three minutes, the first from a fine driving run which ripped open the Buxton defence whilst his second was a shot which flew into the roof of the net giving James Turner no chance in the Bucks goal.

In between those two strikes, Ben Britton did see a long range shot come back off the bar as Buxton strove to get back into the game. Given the two sides had fought out a goalless draw earlier in the season, the avalanche of goals was somewhat unexpected and Turner had to be alert to prevent Will Mountfield from adding to the tally with a superb low shot on the half-volley.

However the respite proved short-lived as a surging run from Dan Davies provided Milner with the simplest of tap-ins on 35 minutes to make the score 6-0. Milner deservedly grabbed his second goal of the game eight minutes into the second stanza when he robbed the ball off defender Johny Carroll before calming slotting home.

A raft of substitutions duly followed and the only surprise was that it took until the first minute of injury time for the Young Reds to record their eighth goal, Dan Jones blocking an attempted to clearance from the over-worked Buxton keeper to shoot home from inside the area. It was a goal which typified Wrexham’s hard-working display with Reece Oliver again showing great promise in the centre of midfield.
