Match Report

Wrexham became the first team to win at Broadhurst Park this season as they overcame a stuttering start to emerge comfortable winners on the 3G surface. After the previous week’s disappointing defeat at City of Liverpool, defender Reece Oliver was handed a start in an unaccustomed central midfield role with Owen Cushion dropping to the bench.

The opening exchanges were dominated by the home side who came close to taking the lead inside the first five minutes when Andy Uduebor capitalised on a mistake by Aaron James, setting up Yann Daryl Tchokotchheu who could only fire into the side-netting.

FC United’s twin strike force were a constant threat and Uduebor forced a fine save from Louis Parr before the Rebels took a controversial lead on 20 minutes. Toby Humphries put Arlo Buller clean through on goal and, despite looking several yards offside, Buller calmly slotted the ball past the advancing Parr.

This setback finally jolted Wrexham into life with Kai Evans testing the FC United keeper on two separate occasions before the skilful striker’s fine sole run and pass saw Jacob Milner force another good parry from Josh Brooks, Evans hitting the rebound against the upright.

The pressure finally told on the half-hour mark when Terrance Lunt’s attempted clearance was blocked by Dan Jones, the ball falling kindly for Evans who calmed opened up his body and placed a right foot shot into the far corner of the net.

The equaliser was harsh on the home side but the Young Reds were now dominating possession and a good break by Milner ended in Tom Jenkins firing just over the bar. Dan Jones sprung the offside trap but his 40-yard snap shot went wide of the target. Then, four minutes into stoppage-time, Oli Hitchcox gave Wrexham an interval lead with a looping header from Jenkins’ corner.

The Young Reds doubled their advantage eights minutes into the second period when the lively Milner broke down the left-wing and crossed for Dan Jones to net with another precise right-foot finish which all but secured the points.

This was an important win for the Young Reds with Oliver growing ever more confident in the middle of the park as Wrexham ran out deserved winners.
