Wrexham’s first game in the Northern Floodlit League ended in a narrow victory for the Robins thanks to first-half goals from Gareth Davies and Bernard Purdie, experienced striker Alan Spence pulling a goal back for the visitors after the break.
Manager Alvan Williams opted to run the role over Irish amateur centre-forward Tony Aherne after his impressive goalscoring feats in the Welsh League (North) side. The 21-year-old trialist from Limerick had scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Llandudno at the weekend before following that up with a brace in a 2-2 draw with Queensferry Wanderers just 48 hours later. Playing his third game in just five days, whilst Aherne didn’t manage to find the net, he did enough to suggest he could adjust to the step up in playing level.
