Wrexham maintained their 100% record in the EFL Youth Alliance (North Division) with a comfortable 3-0 win at Accrington Stanley. Buoyed by a midweek win over Lincoln City, PDL Coach Nick Chadwick made two changes to the starting line-up with Harry Ashfield and Keane Hazeldine coming in for George Cruise and Sam Chesworth respectively, both of whom dropped to the substitutes’ bench.
A blustery wind at the Stanley Sports Hub saw both sides struggle in the early stages but gradually Wrexham began to master the conditions and gain control in midfield. Their efforts were rewarded in the 26th minute when an in-swinging corner from Ashfield found Max Purvis unmarked at the far post and the central defender calmly volleyed home from six-yards out.
The visitors continued to push for a second goal and left-back Tom Kelly came close with a low shot which forced a fine save from Stanley keeper James Rogerson that would have pleased his coach, and former Wrexham custodian, Lee Camp watching on from the sidelines. Camp’s charges almost levelled matters on the stroke of half-time when Anjola Popoola looked set to capitalise on a long ball in behind the Dragons’ backline before Harry Dean raced across to clear the danger.
Popoola forced a smart stop from Elliott Jones after the interval, but Wrexham doubled their lead on the hour when Callum Edwards’ slide-rule pass gave Hazeldine the opportunity to score with a composed finish from 15-yards out. Accrington responded with a double substitution and Rio Alston shot into the side netting before Jones tipped away a low shot from Finlay Wilkinson. Excellent work from Ashfield created an opportunity for Edwards who saw his curling shot superbly saved by Rogerson before a harsh red card for Alston 19 minutes from time effectively ended the game as a contest.
Wrexham’s dominance saw Hazeldine add a third goal on 79 minutes when he forced the ball home from close range after Rogerson could only parry Kelly’s low cross. Camp then received a yellow card in the closing stages as he vented his frustration with the officiating, but he could have no complaints with the result as the Dragons emerged worthy winners.
