Formed: 1903 (Ceased 1922)
Ground: Athletic Grounds
Nickname: The Electricians

Recognising the potential of the emerging need for and use of electricity, entrepreneurs such as the Atherton Brothers – Joseph and Jacob – acquired the rights to manufacture paper insulated cables under licence from America patentees. They established their first factory in Prescot in 1890, installing electric street lighting in the town two years later, and by the turn of the century the British Insulated Wire Company (latterly known as BICC) had secured its prominent position within the power distribution industry.

In 1903 the employees formed their own ‘works’ side and by 1906 had won both the Liverpool & District League and the Liverpool Junior Cup. Further spells followed in the West Cheshire League, Liverpool County League and Liverpool County Combination, the side twice finishing runners-up in the Combination before the outbreak of the First World War. Revived in 1920, the Electricians re-joined the West Cheshire League and entered the FA Cup for the first time, defeating Old Xaverians and Winsford United before losing 7-0 to Wrexham in the First Qualifying Round.

With a host of Football League scouts heading down to the Athletic Grounds, Manchester United invited the entire Wire Works team to play a midweek trial game against their reserve side at Old Trafford. Despite gaining a creditable draw, the re-emergence of Prescot as the area’s leading had seen attendances drop off. With gate receipts barely covering half of the club’s weekly expenses, Prescot Wire Works FC duly folded at the end of the 1921-22 season.
