Biography
James 'Jimmy' Rice signed on trial for Manchester United on 5th September 1934 after impressing whilst playing for Scottish sides Govan Brittania and Holytown United.
His stay ay Manchester United was short and he signed for Wrexham on 24th October 1934 in a deal that saw Wrexham's Bill Bryant go in the opposite direction. Wrexham had hoped that Rice would fill the void left by record goalscorer Tommy Bamford who had joined Manchester United earlier in the season.
However, despite scoring on his debut against Hartlepools United, Jimmy couldn't hold down a place in the first team and eventually returned to Scotland at the end of the 1934/35 season when he signed for Albion Rovers.
He stayed at Albion for two seasons before signing for Falkirk in August 1937 and then, after requesting his registration at Falkirk to be cancelled, joined Alloa Athletic in July 1938.
Whilst at Albion Rovers, Jimmy played and scored in the Scottish Cup 2nd Round game against Rangers on 8th February 1936. Albion led 1-0 at half-time but Rangers went on to win 3-1. The game remains the record attendance for Albion Rovers with 27,381 watching.
