With the scheduled Pontin’s League game with Rochdale having to be rearranged because of the FA Youth Cup-tie at Oldham Athletic, the club arranged this friendly with Liverpool to give many members of the playing squad some much-needed match action. Manager Brian Carey was the main interested observer at the Liverpool FC Academy to watch the club’s reserves fight out a 1-1 draw.
“It was a very good game and a good result for the team,” he said. “We wanted a match to give a number of our players a run out and Liverpool were good enough to play host to us. Matty Done grabbed our goal and a several of the players impressed ahead of the weekend game with Shrewsbury.”
The game saw Ryan Valentine, Juan Ugarte and Andy Fleming continue their recovery following long spells out of action with a friendly against a Liverpool XI this afternoon. Ryan started the game in his usual left back position, while both Juan and Andy came off the bench, as the trio looked to regain their match fitness. Matty Crowell also featured after missing the last few weeks, but the game came a bit soon for fellow midfielder Conall Murtagh who will have to wait a little longer to step back into action.
