Match Report

Whilst still awaiting his registration to be accepted by The Football League to enable him to play competitive games, new signing Silvio Spann had his first run out in Wrexham colours in this friendly fixture at Stockport County. And it proved to be a winning start for the Trinidadian, who made a good solid start to his career with the Dragons by partnering Matt Crowell in the heart of midfield and playing 60 minutes at County’s training ground near Altrincham.

The winning goal came after 20 minutes and Silvio had a hand in the move when taking the ball down the middle before feeding out a pass to Juan Ugarte on the right. The Basque striker’s cross went deep out to the left where Mike Carvill played it back in. The County defence were able to clear their lines, but only as far as Crowell some 25-yards out from goal. The midfielder trapped the ball, looked up, and then calmly placed it inside the keeper’s left hand post.

While most eyes were focused on Spann there were a number of other performances that give hope for the future with Mike Carvill in particular always involved in the action. Manager Brian Carey was more than happy with Silvio’s first run out: “He looked in good shape and played well alongside Matt,” said the boss. “He is still finding his feet, but showed plenty of promise. It will take a little time for him to settle in, find out how we operate and get to know his team mates, but he will be a good player for us.”
