More than 1,000 spectators saw the Colts produce their best performance of the season as they thrashed Caernarfon 5-0 at the Racecourse. Excluding player-coach Ray Wilkins, the average age of the side was just 18 and few could have complained had the Colts doubled their winning margin, such was their dominance against a side who had finished second in the Welsh League (North) table last season.
Wilkins, in the role of a deep-lying centre-forward, scored twice and 20-year-old Doug Rowlands, spearhead of the Wrexham attack , also got two. Right-winger Gordon Adams scored the other whilst on the opposite flank 15-year-old Ron Roberts also impressed, as did Canaries keeper H. Davies who gave a brilliant display to keep the score down.
Speaking after the match about the impact of the experienced Wilkins in moulding raw youngsters into an effective unit, Wrexham chairman Eric McMahon told the Leader correspondent: "Ray is making a fine job of it and this is a useful team."
