Southport's main stand, comprising they entire seating accommodation, dressing rooms and offices, was burned down by fire following the Boxing Day clash with Wrexham. As such, the return fixture just 24 hours later was postponed.

Football League secretary Alan Hardaker said: "The club could have got new gear, but it would have been unfair to the team to play in new boots."

When Mr Hardaker heard of the fire, he suggested to Wrexham officials that they should consider a postponement and Hughie Phillips (chairman) and Cliff Lloyd (secretary) agreed.
