Despite passing a pitch inspection at 11.00 a.m. by local referee T.G. Hewitt (Hawarden), after further continuous rain the match was subsequently called off at 1.45 p.m. when match referee Eric Norman (Blackburn) inspected the deteriorating playing surface.

He told the Wrexham Leader that: "If the match had started play would have become farcical. The pitch was a sea of mud. There was no point in making a start as I knew there was no chance that the game could be played to a finish."

Both managers, Jack Rowley (Wrexham) and Stanley Matthews (Port Vale) agreed with decision. Promptly at 3.15 p.m. - as if to mock wold-be spectators on their way to the ground unaware of the postponement - the sun shone briefly for the first time that day and the rain stopped!
