Thursday brought the first piece of bad news when we were informed the game had been changed to the Queensway Athletic Stadium much to the disappointment of the players who were looking forward to playing on "The Racecourse".
The game was a good advert for Premier Division football with both sides playing attractive football and contesting the game in a very competitive spirit.
Wrexham took the lead when a good piece of work by the young Wrexham left winger saw play switch to the right hand side where the right winger slotted the ball home in the bottom corner. Overton continued to put the Wrexham defence under pressure and so nearly equalised when a Steve Jones header just bounced wide of the post with the keeper well beaten.
The second half was much the same story, however Wrexham increased their lead when the left back weaved his way through the Overton defence and shot home. Overton kept plugging away and were rewarded when Simon Edwards fired home from the edge of area after good Overton pressure.
As Overton pushed for the equaliser Wrexham caused the defence a number of problems and they soon had a chance to increase their lead when a penalty was awarded. Martin Wild for the second week running was equal to it and pulled off a superb save and then dived again to stop the rebound.
In the last ten minutes as hard as Overton tried they couldn't get back on level terms as first teamer Nigel Beaumont continued to marshall things very effectively in the middle of the defence.
An excellent game enjoyed by those who played and watched.
