Formed: 1878
Ground: Hurst Cross
Nickname: The Robins
Previous Names: Hurst (1878-1947)

Originally nicknamed 'The Lambs', the club began life as Hurst in 1878 although it was not until the following year that they played their first friendly match. A first foray into the FA Cup followed in 1883 before they won the Manchester Senior Cup two years later beating Newton Heath (now better known as Manchester United) 3-0 in the final at Whalley Range. Over 9,000 spectators crammed into Hunts Cross for a Lancashire Cup tie with FA Cup holders Blackburn Rovers that same year but somewhat surprisingly the club failed to gain admittance into the newly formed Manchester League in 1893 and fell on hard times.

Wealthy mill owner Alderman J.W. Kenworthy provided the club with fresh impetus as they finally gained entry into the Manchester League in 1909. After spending over £2,000 on ground improvements and winning two titles in three years, the club joined the Lancashire Combination becoming champions in 1917. Next stop was the Cheshire League in 1923 when a change in colours to red shirts brought about their 'Robins' nickname.

The signing of former Everton and England international Dixie Dean caused a sensation in July 1939. His debut at home to Stalybridge on the opening day of the season saw the gates locked long before kick-off but the fans had to wait a further four days for a 4-1 home win over Hyde to see Dean net his first goal. Reputedly on significantly improved terms than during his Goodison Park days, an ankle injury forced Dean out of the rematch with Stalybridge before the outbreak of war brought competitive football to an end for six years.

A change of name to Ashton United on 1 February 1947 followed - Hurst originally having had a separate existence from Ashton-under-Lyne before the Hurst Urban District was taken over by Ashton - and by 1953 they had installed floodlights, marking the occasion with a 4-3 win over Wigan Athletic. By then back in the Lancashire Combination, Ashton had spells in both the Midland Counties League and Cheshire League before becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982. They currently play in the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League.
