Formed in the aftermath of the Second World War, Brymbo Steelworks F.C. were very much the junior partners to the cricket side in the works sponsored sports section. With the pitch situated next to the cricket ground, and the teams changing in the Pavilion, matches often had to be fitted around the cricket team’s fixture schedule. The Steelmen joined the newly formed Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) and finished the 1945-46 season in a highly creditable second place behind champions Llay United. It took a further twelve years before they lifted the championship, edging out Wrexham’s ‘A’ side in a thrilling title race.

The 1960s proved to a golden era for the Tanyfron team as they won the prestigious Welsh Amateur Cup in 1967, beating Cardiff College of Further Education 3-2 in the final at Llanidloes. The Brymbo side included four Welsh Amateur internationals, namely Dilwyn Roberts, Tony Edwards, Martin Edwards and Martin Roberts, and the following term saw them reach the quarter-finals of the Welsh Senior Cup.

Drawn at home to Chester, the Wrexham directors offered the club the opportunity to play the game at the Racecourse. Despite the concerns of their then Football League opponents, Brymbo chairman John Eifion Lloyd was adamant that the match should be played in the village. With no floodlights, the tie took place on a Wednesday afternoon and some 3,000 fans packed the Cricket Field Ground but there was to be no happy ending as Chester ran out comfortable 8-0 winners.

In 1975 a major redevelopment of the steelworks swallowed up the famous ‘Crick’ forcing the club to lead somewhat of a nomadic existence whilst a new ground was constructed. After a brief spell playing ‘home’ games at Solway Banks near the ‘Lodge’, the Steelmen spent the next three seasons at Plas Coch playing fields in Stansty (now the site of Sainsbury’s Supermarket) before finally returning home in August 1979. FAW secretary Trevor Morris officially opened the new ground and dressing rooms with Brymbo holding opponents Coventry City to a 2-2 draw.

Throughout this period they remained a dominant force in local football, as well as twice reaching the final of the Welsh Intermediate Cup in 1980 and 1983. The closure of the Steelworks on 27 September 1990 saw the club drop ‘Steelworks’ from its official title and in the summer of 1991 they joined the fledgling Cymru Alliance League. The move proved problematic at first as they struggled to compete at the higher level but the formation of the League of Wales in 1992 saw several bigger clubs leave. This levelled the playing field for Brymbo and, buoyed by the signing of several former Wrexham players including Mickey Thomas, they finished runners-up to Cemaes Bay in 1994-95.

The summer of 1996 brought a merger with local rivals New Broughton, the neighbouring village side’s hopes of climbing the Welsh Footballing Pyramid having been frustrated by playing on a Council-owned pitch. The move suited both parties as, without the patronage of the Steelworks, Brymbo had struggled financially. Renamed Brymbo-Broughton, the club maintained their Cymru Alliance status for a further six seasons before dropping back into the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area). In 2005 a further merger took place with Summerhill United to form Brymbo-Summerhill, the club name reverting to Brymbo for the commencement of the 2006-07 season. This change welcomed an upturn in fortunes as they gained their first League title pennant in 24 years and won the FAW Trophy.

Following the restructuring of the domestic pyramid in the summer of 2020, Brymbo became founder members of the Ardal North East League, the third tier of the Welsh football league system.
