Ellesmere Port Town have enjoyed several incarnations since organised football commenced in the area in 1892. Initially joining the Wirral League – the forerunner of the West Cheshire League – the club won the Wirral Amateur Cup in 1899 and the Pyke Cup in 1914 before falling dormant during the First World War. Reformed in 1919, they moved grounds from the Boathouse Field to Grace Road and were rewarded by lifting the treble of West Cheshire League, the Pyke Cup and Wirral Senior Cup in 1921. Vying for local supremacy with the likes of Ellesmere Cement Works and Shell, the Port joined the former in the Cheshire County League in 1924, moving once again to a new ground at Whitby Road. Success proved elusive and, after finishing bottom in two of their three seasons, the club dropped back into junior football.

The post war period brought a boom in fortunes and by 1948 they had returned to the fold of the Cheshire County League. Now resident at York Road, they won three consecutive titles (1957-58, 1958-59 & 1959-60) confirming their position as one of England's leading non-league teams. With gates averaging over 3,000, Port applied to join the Football League but received just one vote at the Annual General Meeting held in London in June 1960.

Whilst a further league title followed two years later, interest started to dwindle and consequently they missed out on becoming founder members of the Northern Premier League (NPL) in 1968. That same year their York Street ground disappeared as part of a Council funded town centre redevelopment, the club moving to a new ground at Thornton Road on the edge of the M53 motorway. The Ellesmere Port Stadium was officially opened in September 1968 by former player Joe Mercer; Wrexham providing the opposition in a floodlit friendly match.

Promoted to the NPL in 1971, increasing financial difficulties led to the club resigning from the league in 1973 and dropping down into the lower level Lancashire Combination. The ever-increasing popularity of speedway at the Stadium, in the form of the Ellesmere Port Gunners (1972-1985), further exacerbated the club’s problems and by 1978 they had folded altogether. Further attempts to restore senior football to the town came in the form of Ellesmere Port & Neston (1981-1989) and Ellesmere Port Town (1992-1994) both of who had spells in the North West Counties League. In 2011, the latest club to bear the title re-emerged in the junior ranks and is now playing in the West Cheshire League.
