Match Report

Wrexham eased into the quarter-finals of the Welsh Youth Cup with a comfortable six-goal thrashing of Trefelin BGC on a bitterly cold afternoon at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium. The game was effectively decided inside the first 45 minutes as Dan Nolan’s side stormed into a 4-0 lead courtesy of some fine attacking play.

With Mikey Hayman and Owen Cushion suspended, Callum Edwards pushed forward into the central striking role whilst centre-back Aaron James got his chance in central midfield. To their credit, both performed admirably in their unaccustomed roles.

After a cagey opening, Wrexham’s soon started to find their rythem and Jacob Milner had a shot well saved by Welsh Schoolboy international keeper Lucas Cavalcante. The livewire right-winger then caused more consternation in the Trefelin rearguard with a fine run and cross that was just cleared.

It was no surprise then when Milner opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a fine finish from Harry Dean’s measured through ball. Edwards went close with a long-range effort before Alfie Lussey doubled the Young Reds advantage with a side-foot finish from Milner’s cross after 25 minutes. Sixty seconds later Milner grabbed his second converting James’s diagonal pass.

The South Wales side did get a brief sight of the Wrexham goal when Roan Piper’s free-kick just escaped the head of Dylan Edwards at the far post before an injury-time strike from Lussey put the result beyond doubt, the midfielder firing home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

The second half was all about game management for the Reds and their task was made easier following the dismissal of Trefelin’s Roan Piper for an off the ball incident. Caleb Hughes added a fifth goal on the hour mark when he finished off a fine move involving Dan Wright and Milner, before Callum Edwards completed the scoring seven minutes from time, the makeshift centre forward racing clear to slot the ball under the advancing Cavalcante.

In between those goals, Rowan Davies saw his 73rd minute penalty well saved by Cavalcante after Milner had been brought down by Jacob Collins, but there was no doubting the delight on coach Dan Nolan’s face immediately after the match.

“I thought we played a lot of really good football,” enthused Nolan. “First half we were excellent and created lots of good quality chances. The early goals killed the game and after that it was all about keeping our concentration. The whole team moved the ball so well and defended solidly. It was a very mature performance.”
