Flint enjoyed early success when they reached the final of the inaugural Welsh Amateur Cup in 1891, losing 4-1 to Wrexham Victoria in the final at the Racecourse. Founder members of the North Wales Coast League, they became the first winners of the seven-team competition in 1894 before leaving to play over the border in various Cheshire & Wirral based Leagues.

Having clinched the double of the West Cheshire League and Pyke Cup in 1899, Flint’s local supremacy was challenged by Flint UAC (United Alkali Company). The two clubs enjoyed some feisty encounters, none more so than in November 1903 when a mass brawl broke out which saw two players suspended for 14 days. Yet within two years a public meeting at the Royal Oak Hotel chaired by Major Dyson, the Mayor of Flint, saw the two clubs agree to amalgamate in a bid to increase support. Initially called Flint United, the club won the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1909 and enjoyed a brief spell in the Combination before reverting to junior football.

The club returned to action after the First World War as Flint Town and left Strand Park for Holywell Road in 1924. The following year the Silkmen caused a sensation by beating then Football League side Merthyr Town 1-0 in their Welsh Cup quarter-final, a record crowd seeing Stewart score the winner from the penalty-spot. Having taken three games to overcome Mold in the semi-final, Flint eventually lost 3-1 to Wrexham in the final but they had enhanced their reputation as a ‘Cup’ side. Winners of the Welsh Football League in 1933-34, a further reorganisation of the North Wales League structure in 1935 saw Flint moved to the Welsh League (North) but the increased travelling costs proved prohibitive and they once again reverted to Junior football.

A further amalgamation took place in 1946 when Flint Town and Flint Athletic joined forces to form Flint Town United. Welsh Amateur Cup winners in 1948, United re-joined the Welsh League (North) in August 1949 and celebrated by scoring in just 43 seconds in their opening day win over Caernarvon, Charlie Lewis netting in front of over 2,000 fans. Under the astute leadership of manager Billy Russell, Flint achieved unprecedented success in winning the Welsh Cup in 1954, defeating First Division Cardiff City in the semi-final. A trio of league titles followed between 1955 and 1957 but the side gradually broke up and by 1962 United had been relegated.

Flint’s fortunes revived in the late 1980’s in time for the transformation of Welsh Domestic football. In 1990-91 they won the first ever Cymru Alliance championship as well as the NWCFA Challenge Cup before becoming founder members of the League of Wales in 1992. Despite moving back to the banks of the Dee at Cae-y-Castell in 1993, they were unable to maintain their top-flight status beyond 1998 and are now members of the Cymru North.
