Match Report

Wrexham secure the treble after a extra time win against Junction in Betty Pickering Cup Final

The day was full of anticipation for a quality cup final between two of the best teams in North Wales and the hype lived up to all expectations, with a dramatic 120 mins of football at Bastion Gardens, Prestatyn.

The game started with the normal nervousness expected from a cup final with the Reds having the slight edge in the early exchanges with Lowri Edwards hitting the bar from close range and Syd Hinchcliffe going very close inside the first 10 mins.

But it was Junction who struck first blood on 16" when Stacey Treadwell hammered home from close range to give Junction the edge.

Junction, began to fill with confidence, but Wrexham looked the more dangerous on the counter attack through Musgrave and Alys Hinchcliffe.

But on 32" a wonderful strike from Michaela Stephenson doubled Junctions lead and they had the favourites were rocking.

The Dragons tried and tried but couldn't find the net and a way back into the game and it was very much advantage Junction at half time.

Wrexham needed a big second half and the whatever the gaffer said at half time seemed to work as the Reds came out like a steam train in the second 45".

Lyndsey Rodger began to find space, the attacking threat of Junction was nullified by the Reds centre halfs Kate Edwards and Steph Taylor, and the chances began to arrive.

First Lowri Edwards, then Syd Hinchcliffe and finally Lexi Musgrave all went close. But, it took until the 60" for the Reds to get back in when Edwards was felled by the advancing keeper, penalty! Up stepped skipper Lyndsey Rodger, and she doesn't miss these chances 1-2. Wrexham had the impetus.

Wrexham began to dominate and just 8" later Lexi Musgrave (Wrexham's big game player), does what she does in the big games and brought the game back to 2-2.

Wrexham continued to dominate the game, but just couldn't find the net and the game was taken to extra time (another 30 mins) game on a knife edge.

It took just one minute of the thirty for Wrexham to get the deserved 3rd and it came to who else but Lowri Edwards, scoring very fittingly her 70th goal of the season.

Wrexham had completed an amazing turnaround and saw the game out, and as such clinched the Betty Pickering Cup and with it the TREBLE, in what has been the most amazing of seasons for the Dragons.
